How to prepare for permanent lip makeup without self-medicating

Questions and aesthetic references before permanent lip makeup.

Preparing for permanent lip makeup begins with information, not a list of medicines. Before the visit, establish whether the procedure is suitable for you now, which questions to discuss with a doctor and whether you have time for an unhurried recovery. A friend's advice or a universal social-media checklist does not replace this conversation.

Share important information in advance

Tell your artist about previous permanent makeup, known allergies, reactions to cosmetics or anaesthetics, medical conditions and medicines you take. If other procedures in the lip area are planned, mention them too. You do not need to decide yourself which detail is “important enough”: provide accurate information and resolve uncertain medical questions with a doctor.

Prepare the names of medicines and products, not just descriptions such as “blood tablets” or “allergy cream”. Do not stop prescribed treatment for a cosmetic procedure or change a dose on a blog's advice. If something needs changing, the decision belongs to a doctor who knows your situation.

A separate conversation about cold sores

If you have had cold sores on your lips, mention this before booking. The American Academy of Dermatology lists injury to the area among possible triggers for a recurrence of cold sores, while triggers vary between people. This information is a reason for an individual consultation, not for starting an antiviral course yourself.

A doctor determines whether preventive treatment is needed, which medicine to use and the regimen. Do not copy another client's prescription, even if you have had similar symptoms. If blisters, burning or other new symptoms appear, report them and do not try to hide them with cosmetics before the visit.

Care without experiments

If your lips are dry, do not try to make them “perfect” quickly through intensive scrubbing. The NHS recommends not picking or biting flaky skin and washing your hands before applying balm. If your lips are painful, hot or swollen, seek a doctor's assessment rather than concealing symptoms before the procedure.

Discuss your usual care with the artist. Do not buy several new active products at once just for the appointment: this makes it harder to explain exactly what you used. Preparation aims for a clear understanding of the skin's condition and no unresolved questions, not an elaborate home ritual.

Before the consultation, write down questions that remain unanswered. For example, whether to see a dermatologist first, whether the planned visit is compatible with another procedure and which information to obtain from a doctor. This helps you remember important points while discussing shape and colour.

Plan more than the treatment day

Mention any holiday, photo shoot, important event or work where your usual lip appearance is critical to you. Do not assume someone else's recovery timetable will repeat exactly for you. Ask for written recommendations and clarify how to contact the studio with questions after the visit.

For the first consultation, prepare your treatment history, a list of products and a few colour references. The Anita Space website has a dedicated topic on lip preparation; use it as a conversation starter, not a personal medical prescription. Good preparation leaves you with a clear plan and the right to postpone if health questions remain unresolved.
